Local presence is a must
You need to have presence on the ground to develop your customer relations. Sales are often based more on human relationships than your technology or price point.
Immature B2B sales channels
Structured prospecting, sales techniques and other competencies are still largely absent. Most salespeople have never received any sort of formal training. Company structures and behaviours are very hierarchical and prefer the stick over the carrot.
Language and cultural barriers
Vietnamese companies tend to select their partner because of their trustworthiness and reputation, rather than for commercial reasons. The first meeting is always about deciding if a business relationship is possible or not. Only after that comes the product. Language skills are getting better, although they are still far from acceptable and there is a big difference between generations.

Limited marketing channels
There are no regular industry newspapers or other traditional media platforms to promote your products. What remains is only digital marketing as an efficient tool for B2C, but it’s less efficient for B2B communications.
Value selling missing from toolkit
Value selling is a challenge in Vietnam. Old attitudes of buying the cheapest product without long-term consideration still reign and act as trade barrier in many cases. Salespeople tend to concentrate on price instead of value to secure the order.
Distributors lack of cash and patience
